The last eclipse took place on Wednesday, 11 August, 1999 and on that very day, almost exactly 27 years ago to the day, the installation of the new bells at the Cathedral was completed.
The bell ringers celebrated at the top of the tower. A pinhole camera was made to view an image of the eclipse and multiple, blurred images of the eclipse also appeared on the road beneath the old copper beech tree as the light filtered through the spaces between the leaves.
