The Cathedral Bell Ringing Team meet regularly, and this update has been written by Ron East, Tower Captain:
The Cathedral band now numbers more than thirty members and continues to receive requests from persons interested to learn how to ring bells. There are several practices each week: on a Tuesday afternoon (tied bells), on a Friday evening (tied and open bells) and on a Saturday morning (by arrangement on tied bells). In addition, there are two, monthly method practices, a ten-bell practice and a day of four, one-hour practices at which quarter peals might be attempted. All are on tied bells.
Over the Christmas period in 2023, ringing took place for the Hospice ‘Light up a Life’ service, the two services of readings and carols and, of course, for the Christmas Day service when Canon Benjamin Carter joined the ringers in the ringing room beforehand to lead the prayers. Cathedral ringers also supported the ringing at Aspatria, Brampton, Thursby, Wigton and Shap over the same period.
On New Year’s Eve, ringers met in the tower to ring-in the new year after the Cathedral clock had struck midnight.
Also present was our most recent recruit, the Cathedral’s curate the Revd Dr Belinda Stanley, who was presented with her ART Level One Certificate in bell handling. Congratulations from everyone in the tower.
