On Monday 28 April 2025, local artist, Michael Batey, launched his latest exhibition of work in the medieval Undercroft at Carlisle Cathedral. The evening preview was well attended, with several of the unique pieces selling within minutes of the exhibition doors opening.
Known for being a Turneresque painter – of which there are a number of paintings – Michael will also be exhibiting drawings, figurative and landscape, and other work in different mediums, which will bring another interesting side to the exhibition and show Michael in a different light.
Michael said “I am very excited to be showing my work over the 10 days in the Undercroft at Carlisle Cathedral. My artwork will be in different mediums so there will be something for everyone to see. The work has been created over a couple of years with many new pieces added and will be showing my strong faith and love of light.”
The Very Revd Jonathan Brewster, Dean of Carlisle, added “We’re delighted to be hosting Michael’s exhibition here. The Undercroft, with its amazing stone-ribbed ceiling, is a wonderful space and Michael’s atmospheric artwork has made it feel even more special. Well worth a visit.”
Entry to the exhibition is free, though donations are welcomed. All artwork will be available for sale, with 20% of the proceeds in aid of Carlisle Cathedral.
The exhibition will be on display until Sunday 11 May, from 10am – 4pm. The Undercroft is accessed via the Carlisle Cathedral Café, and a lift is available if required.
