Bishop Smith’s Registry Refurbished

Oct, 14, 2025

Thanks to a grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, we have continued to improve the Cathedral precinct by restoring the Bishop Smith’s Registry. Originally built in 1699 by Bishop Smith to house the records of the Bishops of Carlisle, the Registry has had many uses through the years, including as the Diocesan Resources Centre and leisure space for the Cathedral’s choristers. Now, we have brought the Registry back to life and ready for a whole host of community uses – more news coming shortly… This project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills. Find out more here.
