As I approach my first Christmas as the new Dean of Carlisle, I have been reflecting on the many blessings of the Cathedral, not least our wonderful starry ceiling which silently accompanies the prayers which have been offered here for over 900 years.
During this Christmas season you’ll find many invitations, opportunities for prayer and worship, music and craft, hospitality, and friendship, all of which in their small way are invitations to follow the star and behold the truth that God shows us in the humble birth of Jesus Christ.
As we look ahead to the new year the Cathedral wants to grow younger and more diverse, enabling all to find that deep sense of rest and belonging which we long for. You may be joining us to celebrate, whether graduating as a student, visiting the cathedral with your school, or simply coming to give thanks for something or someone special in your life. You may feel stewed up with anxiety – ‘what on earth is going to happen’, ‘did I make the right choice’, ‘how can I do anything about it’. The cathedral offers a space that is rich in silent love, a place of sanctuary and rest from which people can celebrate, pray, and discover.
You are all most welcome and I do hope you’ll get a chance to visit us at some point over the next few weeks and months.
