Artists can win a special £1, 000 commission as part of an arts festival returning to Carlisle in August.
The second Historic Quarter Arts Festival wants amateur and professional artists to submit entries for an exciting new competition, with the theme Carlisle 2022.
The winner will receive a prestigious £1000 commission to create an artwork of Carlisle Cathedral in its 900th year.
Artworks entered for the competition will be displayed around the Historic Quarter throughout August and visitors will be invited to follow the art trail with a specially created map. The winner will be announced at the start of September.
It’s the second year of the arts festival which in 2021 showcased 50 artists across 16 venues including cafes, hairdressers, Tullie House and the cathedral.
Melanie Gardner, fine & decorative arts curator at Tullie House, is one of the judges. She said:
“Last year’s festival was the first project for the Historic Quarter Network, which brought together businesses to collaborate on promoting the area.”
Nick Turner, director of Intro PR & Social Media, which has organised the competition on behalf of the Historic Quarter Arts Festival, is pleased to see the festival return after a successful first year.
“Last year’s Arts Festival was a real boost after such a difficult time and we are delighted that it was well received enough to come back in 2022.
“The competition promises to show a variety of images of the city and we can’t wait to see them around the Historic Quarter – and what the winner comes up with for their artwork of one of Carlisle’s great icons.”
The Revd Canon Dr Benjamin Carter, who is Canon Warden at Carlisle Cathedral, said: “This is such an important year as the Cathedral marks its 900th anniversary and we can’t think of a better way to mark the occasion than with a unique piece of artwork which will be enjoyed and admired for generations.
“Best of luck to all the entrants.”
The event is supported by Carlisle City Council and the University of Cumbria.
The competition entries can be completed in any medium apart from photography and an image of the completed work should be submitted by Monday July 18. For further details email firstname.lastname@example.org
