Noted composer, Phillip Cooke, has written a new organ work for Carlisle Cathedral. It is based on the plainsong melody known as ‘O lux beata Trinitas’ – which is appropriate as Carlisle Cathedral is dedicated to the Holy and Undivided Trinity. The piece will receive its world premiere at Evensong on Trinity Sunday, 26 May, played by our Organ Scholar, David T. Shingler. The full title of the piece is “Recessional on O lux beata Trinitas”.
Phillip Cooke was born in Penrith and grew up in the Lake District, so has strong local connections. He is now Professor of Music at the University of Aberdeen and his compositions have been performed all over the world.
