Thanks to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund/Levelling Up funding and Cumberland Council, we have used a High Street Building Grant to part-fund the refurbishment of the ground floor of our medieval Prior’s Tower.
The Prior’s Tower is a three-story building set within the Cathedral precinct, built in the late 15th or early 16th century. The ground floor is a multi-purpose space which is used as a breakout space or waiting area for the meeting room on the first floor, as well as a storage area for our educational resources.
The Prior’s Room on the first floor has a grand stone fireplace with 16th century woodwork, and an original painted ceiling which is both an important and rare example, loaded with symbolism and references to local families including the Dacres, Percys, Greystokes and Senhouses.

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is a central pillar of the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda and provides £2.6 billion of funding for local investment by March 2025.
