The back ten bells of Carlisle Cathedral were rung half muffled on 10 November for the Remembrance service. Each clapper had been fitted on one side with a leather pad called a muffle. The other side of the clapper was unmuffled causing each bell to sound a mournful stroke followed by a bright stroke. Traditionally, this sybolises death and resurrection. At the end of ringing the bells were silenced one by one until only the deep tenor bell was left tolling.
Twenty one Cathedral ringers came to ring in memory of those who had fallen.
