Two of our Cathedral bell ringers, David and Judith Horne, recently organised a ringing tour of churches in the north Lincolnshire area.
Ringers from other churches in the diocese were also invited and a band of eighteen ringers eventually met up to ring at eighteen churches during the three-day tour. Ringing ranged from a six-bell tower at All Hallows, Ordsall with a tenor bell of only 7 cwt (about ⅜ ton) to a ten-bell tower at St Mary Magdalene, Newark with a tenor bell of 31 cwt (about 1½ tons). Not only does each ring of bells present a unique challenge to ring them but the churches are treasure houses of architecture and history. Saint Mary, Stow is a magnificent example of Saxon and Norman architecture and Saint Helen, Brant Broughton has a splendid painted nave ceiling with carved angels. Amusingly, All Saints Church at Belton has an hour glass timer mounted on the pillar opposite the pulpit to remind the vicar when the sermon should end.
Everyone met for a meal together on the last day of the tour at ‘The Generous Briton’ at Brant Broughton and all agreed it was a well organised and enjoyable tour. Thank you to David and Judith.
