Auditions for both boys and girls (currently in Year 3) will be held on:
Saturday 10th June: Girl chorister auditions (closing date for applications Thursday 1st June)
Saturday 17th June: Boy chorister auditions (closing date for applications Thursday 8th June)
Successful candidates will begin as choristers in September. On the audition days, prospective choristers and their parents come to the Cathedral to meet us and to find out more about the choir. Over the course of an hour or so, they have the opportunity to chat informally with current choristers and their parents over refreshments, and during each child’s audition their parents are able to meet with one of the cathedral clergy to talk through the commitment involved.
Boys and girls are eligible to join the Cathedral Choir as probationers once they reach Year 4 (younger children are encouraged to join Carlisle Cantate). No previous musical training is required; all that is looked for is a good ear and a love of singing. A child’s reading ability is also taken into consideration.
Life as a Cathedral chorister is challenging, rewarding and exciting – all at the same time! While offering a first-rate musical education, it also teaches some of the most important lessons for life, such as self-discipline and working together as a team.
