At the start of the year one member of our Bell Ringing team, Janet, came up with the idea of practising and ringing a new quarter peal each month and alighted upon the idea of celebrating a particular flower that blooms in that particular month.
David Steel, Tower Captain, said “This has given great pleasure to all the band members capable of and willing to participate in her challenging but greatly rewarding project. She deserves to be thanked and applauded for the time and effort that she has put into the organisation and cultivation of it all, it has been no easy task but knowing Janet she wouldn’t do it if it was easy. And of course they have called themselves the ‘Flower Arrangers’. Well done everyone who has blossomed anew.”
Janet added “Members of the Cathedral band have come together each month this year to ring quarter peals of doubles methods, each named after flowers. The aim has been to ring a method named after a flower that is blooming in the grounds of the Cathedral during that particular month, forging a deeper connection between the activities in the tower and the ebb and flow of nature in the cathedral close.
In January, we rang Snowdrop as carpets of them emerged promising spring’s arrival. In February, Violet. Then Primrose, Daisy, and Bluebell brought us to the summer for Rose, Honeysuckle and Geranium. We will head into the autumn and winter to complete our project.”
