On Wednesday 25 March, The Venerable Michael Everitt, Interim Dean of Carlisle, attended the Installation of the new Archbishop of Canterbury, with The Venerable Stewart Fyfe, Archdeacon of West Cumberland, and The Right Revd Rob Saner-Haigh, Bishop of Carlisle (pictured below).
Michael said “It was a joy and a privilege to be part of the service for the installation of Sarah Mullally as the new Archbishop of Canterbury.
In a powerful service in the presence of the Prince and Princess of Wales and surrounded by Archbishops from around the world, the bishops and deans of the Church of England, ecumenical and other world faith leaders and many others from all areas of national life, the new Archbishop demonstrated her gentle, gracious and powerful leadership.
The service had prayers, music and dance from around the Anglican Communion and culminated in her being placed in the ancient seat of St Augustine as the leader of the world wide community.
The combination of the personal and the global was as inspiring as the depth of the spiritual endeavour as her future ministry was soaked in prayer.
There was an especial dynamic of history being made as she is the first female Archbishop of Canterbury. This combined with her insights as being a nurse and becoming the senior figure in that area prior to ordination, marks her becoming Archbishop of Canterbury as being momentous not just for the church but for the nation and beyond.”
